John Beaulieu, Dave Terry, and Dan Wasserman are principals in Pacific Data Management, Inc. They started their database careers at ACI US, Inc. the publisher of 4th Dimension®. Having leveraged their early Macintosh experience, they now provide a full range of database development services. PDM develops client/server solutions using the best tools available such as FileMaker Pro®, 4th Dimension®, MSSQLServer®, Oracle® and Sybase®.


John is an experienced database and network designer. He has over nine years of computer science experience with six years centered on database systems. At ACI US, John spent three years working his way from Technical Support Engineer to Manager of Internal Database Design. In his last role, John was responsible for the ACI US network and the development of all internal databases.

In August of 1992, John left ACI US to start Pacific Data Management. In his brief time as an independent database developer, John has completed several major projects for well known clients such as Ingres, NASA and Hitachi.

1992, ACI US Inc., Manager of Internal Database Design
As Manager of Internal Database Design John was responsible for all internal databases at ACI US, including the primary company database used by customer service, technical support, sales, marketing and order entry. John was also responsible for the design, installation and up keep of the ACI US local and wide area networks.

1991, ACI US Inc., Manager of Technical Support
As Manager of Technical Support John managed 10 engineers. He provided technical assistance and instruction to the engineers. He also created a multi-user technical support database to track technical support calls.

1990, ACI US Inc., Technical Support Engineer
John supported developers and end-users with technical assistance via phone, fax, e-mail and standard mail. He pioneered many of the techniques in 4D programming used today and wrote many of the technical notes found in ACI US Developer mailings. His other tasks included testing new products, reporting bugs to engineers, and editing documentation for 4D version 2.0.

1989 - 1990, Peripheral Visions, Partner
John was the programmer of a 4D based product: Constituent Manager, a political application for legislatures and candidates. Peripheral Visions was one of the original members of the Certified Developer Program at ACI US.


Dave has over fourteen years experience in computer science with seven of those years focused on database design. Dave is known for his expertise with all ACI US products and has the reputation as a leading 4D programmer. Formerly a Senior Director at ACI US, he has been involved with 4th Dimension since its introduction in the United States in 1987. He has played many roles at ACI US including: Technical Support Manager, Director of Engineering, Director of Developer Services, and Senior Director.

In his various roles at ACI US, Dave has worked on many projects including: technical documentation, product examples, optimization techniques, feature definitions, product brochures, technical notes, press relations, marketing and product management.

As a PDM associate Dave provides custom database solutions. His specialties include: Accounting, MRP Systems, Financial Analysis, and multi-user optimization. Dave also is well versed in using 4D to connect to Oracle databases.

1993, ACI US Inc., Senior Director
Responsible for Developer Services, Training and Product Marketing. It was in this position that Dave used his extensive product expertise to assist in marketing including: advertisements and promotions, product positioning, press relations, and pricing. Dave had the intense responsibility of remaining completely abreast technically of the entire ACI US product line. It was because of this strong knowledge of ACI US' products that Dave was responsible for presenting 4D to corporations, developer conferences and other ACI US personnel.

1992, ACI US Inc., Director of Developer Services
Managed two departments, Developer Services and Training. Continued as a technical resource to Engineering. Dave used his extensive product expertise to assist in marketing.

1990 - 1991, ACI US Inc., Director of Engineering
As Director of Engineering Dave played a strong role in the success of several of ACI US' products. His responsibilities included: feature set definition, language definition, testing, developing terminology, polishing interfaces and resources, controlling conformity between products, and documentation. It was during this time that Dave wrote the following manuals: 4D CALC Language Reference, 4D Write Language Reference, 2D Graph Language Reference, Graph 3D Language Reference and 4D Draw Language Reference. In addition, Dave was responsible for the editing all of the ACI US product documentation for technical accuracy and consistency, including all 4th Dimension Manuals (including version 3.0), 4D Server, and all productivity modules.

1989, ACI US Inc., Manager of Technical Support
As Manager of Technical Support Dave managed 7 engineers. He provided technical assistance and instruction to the engineers. He also wrote many of the higher level ACI US technical notes and pioneered much of the programming techniques used with 4th Dimension.

1988, ACI US Inc., Technical Support Engineer
Dave supported developers and end-users with technical assistance via phone, fax, e-mail and standard mail. Pioneered many of the techniques in 4D programming used today. He wrote many technical notes and tested the product and reported bugs. He also played a large role in the editing of documentation for 4D version 2.0.

1981 to 1987, Raychem Corporation, Programmer Analyst
Evaluated software products for use in creating an automated manufacturing system. Designed and implemented a multi-user application to automate the creation of specifications used by manufacturing, production control, engineering and quality assurance. Used micro-computer based software to automate various tasks in production control and manufacturing.


A former member of the TriTech development group, Dan has been providing custom database solutions for over eight years. His experience with SQL database products, and in connecting Macintoshes to foreign host systems, makes Dan one of the most sought after client/server architects in the country. Dan is also adept at creating 4th Dimension external routines and is just as comfortable writing in Pascal or C as he is with 4D.

Dan has implemented extensive Oracle Server and Sybase SQL Server systems and can work in either environment. Because of his cross platform experience, Dan has an extensive knowledge of Sybase, Ingres and Oracle DBMS systems as well as a strong working knowledge of UNIX and VMS.

As a PDM associate Dan provides custom database solutions. His specialties include: Host connectivity using Sybase, DAL, and Oracle, customer service databases, and employee management systems.

1990-1993, TriTech Systems, Partner
As a partner in TriTech Systems, Dan provided custom database solutions for all types of businesses. In one of his largest projects, Dan implemented a comprehensive membership tracking system using a client/server architecture. This system used 4th Dimension on Macintoshes to connect to Sybase SQL Server on several hosts. It also included remote sites that connected via modem to the same hosts.

1989 - 1990, ACI US Inc., Connectivity Manager
Dan helped create the first 4th Dimension to DAL (formerly CL/1) connection for ACI US. It was during this time that he was responsible for the product definition and testing.

1988, ACI US Inc., Technical Support Engineer
Dan supported developers and end-users with technical assistance via phone, fax, e-mail and standard mail. Pioneered many of the techniques in 4D programming used today. He wrote many technical notes and tested the product and reported bugs. It was also during this time that Dan wrote several of the Pascal libraries used in the 4D Externals kit.

1987, Daisy Systems, System Manager
Prior to ACI US, Dan was a System Manager at Daisy Systems in Mountain View, California. While there, he was responsible for maintaining the bug-reporting system based on DEC's All-In-One database system. During his time at Daisy Systems he began doing 4th Dimension database consulting in the evenings and authored a Video Store point of sale/rental application. Prior to moving to the Macintosh environment, Dan was developing SQL based systems under VMS.
